Psychology Undergraduate Major Application Period

The Psychology Department is not accepting applications for undergraduate major at this time. The next application period will be from October 1 through November 30, 2012. Admissions decisions will be made by April 2013.

Relaxed Curriculum for New Major

Students may take any 4 basic courses and any 6 basic or breadth courses for a total of 10 elective courses.

The CORE remains unchanged: 200, 303, 371, 400 and 690. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all CORE courses. CR must be earned in 303 and 690. Courses 371 and 400 must be taken for a letter grade.

Mandatory Advising

Students that need to fulfill the Mandatory Advising Requirement must complete the following:

  • Print the Psychology Mandatory Advising from the website. MA Form (PDF)
  • Discuss your plans and address any questions you might have about the major with your advisor and obtain their signature.
  • Submit signed form to EP 301for advising clearance.

Graduation Applications

Psychology department seniors that will be graduating this semester will need to fill out a copy of the graduation application and have it reviewed by their faculty advisor. Drop off your application into the department office (EP 301) to obtain the Department Chair's signature. The student will recieve a call once the application is ready to be picked up (usually two day turn around time). The student should then take their signed application to the bursur's window at One Stop Student Services, pay the fee, and turn their application into the registrar's window.

Psychology Major Program Impaction

The Psychology major is an impacted program, which means there are more students interested in the major than we can accommodate. Therefore, admission to the Psychology major is a selective and competitive process. The Department faculty, in consultation with the University Admissions Office, reviews impaction admissions criteria on an annual basis. Impaction approval was granted by the CSU Chancellor’s office beginning in July 2009.

Temporary Suspension of the Psychology Minor

The minor is being reviewed for temporary suspension. During this process, we are not accepting any new psychology minors. Students who have already declared the minor may continue their planned course of study.

Implementation of our "new" major; Continuation of our "old" major

For students planning to graduate in Fall 2009 or Spring 2010:

Due to budget cuts and canceled courses, the graduation requirements for the BA in Psychology degree have been modified. These requirements are meant to facilitate timely graduation without minimizing the value of the broad area of study in psychology.

  1. Take 12 units of courses within the list of courses designated as "Basic"
  2. Take 18 units of any combination of courses designated as "Basic" or "Bredth"

Students are strongly encouraged to seek advising in order to create a degree program that covers the widest range of courses, given the constraints of our course offerings. To ensure timely filing of graduation applications, students are further reminded to see faculty advisers early in the semester.
